Napier Prison

Napier Prison

You don't have to have a record to be inside Napier Prison. Built in 1862 and decommissioned as a prison in 1993, it is the country's oldest prison complex.

During the 19th century, four hangings were conducted at the prison.

Of the 85 hangings in  New Zealand between 1842 and 1957,  4 were in Napier. 1871, 1884, and 2 in 1889.

There have been many reports of ghostly occurrences at the site such as unexplained footsteps, disembodied faces, doors opening and closing on their own, and the ghost of a murderer on the anniversary of his execution.

It has also been used for making of several films.

Not only was it a prison , but it also served as an orphanage and psychiatric unit.

In 2002 it was turned into a historical tourist attraction.

Not only can you have a prison tour and experience, but there is also an escape room which will last about an hour……..or……until you escape.
