National Army Museum

National Army Museum

Whether or not you have a military background, you’ll gain a deep appreciation for the history of New Zealand's Armed Forces and their global contributions.

The museum covers a broad range of conflicts, from the Māori Wars (1841-1907) to the Second Boer War (1899) and up to the present day with ISIL deployments. Currently, New Zealand has military personnel stationed in six different countries.

Located on the Desert Road in Waiouru, this museum is an excellent stop for a break when heading north or south. Enjoy a meal and immerse yourself in New Zealand’s military history.

The museum is well-curated, showcasing significant historical moments. For perspective, in 1939, New Zealand's population was just 1,626,500, and 105,000 (6.5%) served overseas. Of those, 11,900 perished and 16,000 were wounded.

Lest we forget.
