Republic of Whangamomona

Republic of Whangamomona

The Forgotten World Highway, also known as State Highway 43, is one of my favorite drives. Stretching 150 km between Taumarunui and Stratford, this picturesque route takes about 2.5 hours to traverse, winding through rugged hills and charming tiny settlements.

A highlight of the journey is the Republic of Whangamomona, a quirky locale that’s possibly the only republic in the world with animal Presidents, including Billy the Kid, Tai the Poodle, and Murtle the Turtle. Established in 1989, the Republic’s Whanga Pub, built in 1902, was originally a hub for local sawmill workers. Stop by to delve into the area's history, explore the sights, and get a passport stamp as a memento. Don’t miss Whangamomona Republic Day, celebrated every two years in January with lively events such as sheep racing, gumboot throwing, whip cracking, possum skinning, and more.

Just north of Whangamomona, you’ll encounter the Moki Tunnel, a historic and narrow tunnel hand-dug in 1935. Initially 5 meters tall, it was widened to 7 meters in 1989. Beyond the tunnel, the road opens up to the stunning Tangarakau Gorge, where the tarseal surface transitions to gravel.

Be cautious on the narrow, winding sections of the road, and take your time to enjoy the drive. Regardless of which direction you travel, be sure to spend some time in Taumarunui to fully appreciate the area’s offerings.
