Castlepoint Lighthouse

Castlepoint Lighthouse

Castlepoint Lighthouse, located 65km from Masterton, stands at 162m and offers a scenic adventure. Named Castle Rock by Captain Cook in 1770 for its battlement-like appearance, the Māori name, Rangiwhakaoma, translates to “where the sky runs.”

Built in 1913, the lighthouse was originally fueled by oil. In 1954, it was upgraded to an electric light powered by a local diesel generator, and in 1961, it connected to the mains grid. Unique in New Zealand, it is constructed from riveted steel sheets and is affectionately known as "The Holiday Light." Its beam is visible up to 35km away.

Castlepoint's beach, which has hosted an annual horse race meeting since 1872, is renowned for its historic charm. During migration season, Southern Right and Humpback Whales can sometimes be spotted from the shore, along with fur seals and dolphins. The beach is perfect for swimming and fishing.

The local village, with a population of around 57, features a jetty for boat launches and a Store/Café where you can pick up bait and enjoy a coffee.
