Queens Park Invercargill

Queens Park Invercargill

When I visited my friend Tony in Invercargill, he took me to the Cheeky Llama Cafe in Queens Park for coffee, and it was definitely worth the trip.

Queens Park, located near the heart of Invercargill, was established as part of the town's original layout in 1856. Spanning 200 acres, it is home to the Southland Museum and Art Gallery, the Astronomical Society Observatory, and the Southland Cricket team. The park features an 18-hole golf course, an aviary, botanical gardens, a waterpark, a farmyard area, animal enclosures, and various sports facilities.

Cyclists will enjoy the park's extensive pathways, and every Saturday, the “Parkrun” event attracts runners of all ages for a 5km course.

The Feldwick Gates, built in 1924 and named after John Feldwick, add historical charm to the entrance. Feldwick was the brother of MP Henry Feldwick, who served Invercargill as an Independent MP and later as a member of the NZ Legislative Council.

Queens Park is a magnificent space, and with so much to explore, it's worth dedicating half a day to fully experience its stunning rose garden, rhododendron dell, azalea garden, Japanese garden, bush paths, rock and herb gardens, stumpery, and the indoor Winter Garden featuring tropical plants and cacti.
