Explore the Monowai Goldmine Track: A Scenic Adventure Near Thames

Located about 16 km north of Thames and 40 km south of Coromandel, the Monowai Goldmine Track offers a delightful and relatively easy hiking experience through stunning New Zealand bushland.

Trail Highlights:

Scenic Beauty: The track meanders through a diverse and picturesque bush setting, following a stream with charming bridges over each crossing. Be prepared for wet feet due to a concrete ford near the start.

Kauri Trees: A highlight of the trail is a climb of 136 steps leading to a stand of mature kauri trees, showcasing these majestic giants.

Historical Interest: About 25 meters from the trailhead, a short side track leads to the Old Monowai Goldmine Battery site. Between 1891 and 1915, this site produced 1,240 kg of bullion. Although several attempts were made to revive the mine, each effort eventually failed, leading to the companies’ liquidation.

Trail Details: The hike is mostly on a gentle grade and takes approximately an hour and a half to complete, making it suitable for most walkers.

Experience the Charm: Enjoy a blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue on the Monowai Goldmine Track, a perfect outing for those exploring the Thames-Coromandel region.
