Mount Maunganui, or Mauao in Māori, is a 232-meter-high volcanic cone offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surf, beaches, and township below. The climb to the summit is a rewarding challenge, taking about 40 minutes. Be prepared with a bottle of water, as the hike can be strenuous on hot summer days and includes 576 stairs. For a less steep route, opt for a slightly longer path that bypasses the stairs.
