Northern Gold Rush

Northern Gold Rush

Thames, Waihi, Karangahake Gorge is where it happened started in 1852 when a small find  was made.  It wasn't until 1867 that considerable gold was located.  But alas, by the 1890's it was all but over when major gold was discovered in the South Island.  Never the less, over $16m worth of gold was extracted.

Today the only mine of significance is run by Oceana Gold in Waihi that mine approx  60,000  oz a year  from various operations

Around the region are quite a few relics of the era, but  just on the outskirts of Thames “The Goldmine Experience” which is well worth a visit.

A self-guided tour allows you to explore the photographic museum, view a video presentation, discover mining relics, see steam-powered machines, and become acquainted with our Cave Weta colony. Try your luck at gold panning!

The Goldmine Experience is a unique and hands-on way to discover a whole lot of mining history, chemistry, minerology, power generation and all the other skills and knowledge used by early pioneers in the search of fortune.

A reminder it is open 7 days a week , but only from 10:00AM to 1:00PM
