Cape Reinga Lighthouse

Cape Reinga Lighthouse

Cape Reinga Lighthouse in the “Winterless North”

Cape Reinga or Te Rerenga Wairua in Maori is not only a stunningly beautiful place to visit, but it also holds great significance in Maori culture. This is the place where spirits come to descend into the underworld, leaving behind Aotearoa for Hawaiki-A-Nui, the land of their ancestors.

Not only is it the Northern most point of New Zealand, but it is also the place where the South Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea collide. When I first visited this place about 50 years ago, I was told that on a good day you could see the ripple and colour of the waters meeting. I left convinced because I think I saw this.

On the way to the Cape there are so many beautiful places to visit on the way, but this time I will leave it up to you to find them.

From Kaitaia to Cape Reinga its 110km and drive time is about 90 minutes.
