Napier and Hastings

Napier and Hastings

Napier, a coastal city on New Zealand's North Island, is set amid the renowned wine-producing region of Hawke's Bay. Rebuilt after a 1931 earthquake, the city is known for art deco landmarks like the zigzag-patterned Daily Telegraph Building. Along the tree-lined waterfront promenade the Marine Parade, the Pania of the Reef statue depicting a Maori maiden, is a symbol of the city

Hastings is an inland city of New Zealand and is one of the two major urban areas in Hawke's Bay, on the east coast of the North Island. The population of Hastings is 50,400, with a further 15,100 people in Havelock North and 2,470 in Clive. Hastings is about 18 kilometres inland of the coastal city of Napier

The Wine industry is huge with approximately 90% of New Zealand's Syrah, Cabernets and Merlot being  produced here. It's the “Red Blends” Capital of New Zealand.

The region is very flat so the numerous cycle ways are very popular. Rent a bike for about $50 a day and get out in the sunshine.

There is white water rafting, art deco tours  or just walking along Marine Parade  and around town.

So get down to Hawkes Bay ..(named by Captain Cook after the First Lord of the Admiralty Sir Edward Hawke.)

Enjoy the people, the place, the hospitality and the great scenery and definitely a glass of wine.

PS. In February each year in Napier is the Art Deco Festival.  It's really fun with music and events everywhere. Some of the  ladies dye their hair bright colours, people dress in period costumes, streets are full of vintage cars.
