The Church of the good Shepherd
The Church of the Good Shepherd in Lake Tekapo was built in 1935 to honor both God and the pioneering settlers of the Mackenzie District. Designed by Christchurch architect R.S.D. Harman, based on sketches by local artist Esther Hope, it reflects the simplicity and resilience of early settlers.
Unique features include the natural landscape being left untouched during construction, with local stones used for the walls. The church originally had a wooden shingle roof, later replaced by slate in 1957. Even the vestry’s cupboard is made from wood from the old Tekapo Bridge.
The church continues to serve as a place of worship and is a treasured symbol of quiet strength and simplicity in the region, hosting regular interdenominational services.
