Dawson Falls-Mahoe
Dawson Falls, a stunning 18-meter-high waterfall, can be found along the Kapuni Loop Track on the southeastern side of Mt. Taranaki. The trail begins at the Dawson Falls Visitor Centre, making it the perfect starting point for this scenic adventure.
Known as Te Rere-o-Noke in Māori, which means "the falls of Noke," the waterfall is steeped in legend. According to Māori lore, Noke, a local figure, escaped his enemies by hiding behind the falls. The English name comes from Thomas Dawson, an early European settler who discovered the falls in 1883, leading to its rise as a tourist spot.
To reach Dawson Falls from New Plymouth, head south on SH3 to Stratford, then take Opunake Road through Cardiff to Mahoe. Alternatively, take Monmouth Road to Cardiff Road to avoid Stratford. Once in Mahoe, turn right onto Manaia Road, which leads directly to the Dawson Falls Visitor Centre. Enjoy a peaceful hike through lush forest to this iconic waterfall.
