The Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre

The Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre

The Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre, located at the iconic Hermitage Hotel in Aoraki/Mount Cook Village, is a tribute to New Zealand’s most famous mountaineer and explorer, Sir Edmund Hillary. This museum and educational centre celebrates his life achievements, especially his historic ascent of Mount Everest in 1953, and his lifelong connection to the Aoraki/Mount Cook region, where he trained for many of his expeditions.

Visitors can explore a range of fascinating exhibits covering the history of mountaineering, the geology of the Southern Alps, and the natural wonders of the Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. The Alpine Centre also includes a 3D theatre, planetarium, and a dedicated Hillary Gallery showcasing memorabilia from Sir Edmund's personal collection.

The experience is both educational and inspiring, offering insights into the challenges of high-altitude exploration and the sheer determination it took to conquer the world’s highest peaks. The centre is open year-round and offers a great indoor activity for visitors exploring the Aoraki region.
