Piroa Falls-Kaiwaka

Piroa Falls is a hidden gem nestled in the Waipu Gorge, about a 20-minute drive from Kaiwaka. The falls are a peaceful retreat surrounded by lush native bush, perfect for a refreshing swim or a scenic picnic. The short walk to the falls takes around 10-15 minutes, with well-marked tracks through the forest. The waterfall cascades into a clear pool, making it ideal for a summer dip. It’s a serene spot, offering tranquility away from more crowded tourist destinations, perfect for nature lovers and explorers.

Turn off SH1 onto Waipu Gorge Road at the bottom of the Northern side of the Brynderwyn Hills, and drive for about 6km until you see the sign for Piroa Falls on your right. A 10 minute walk through native bush, down through a beautiful gorge and across the Ahuroa River brings you to the Falls. There are a number of shallow swimming holes along the way, with a deep pool at the falls itself, great for cooling off after a day at the beach – and you can even swim under the waterfall!
