Larnach Castle - Dunedin
Larnach Castle, located on the picturesque Otago Peninsula, is New Zealand's only castle, rich in history and grandeur. Built in 1871 by William Larnach, a prominent businessman and politician, the castle reflects a blend of Gothic Revival and Victorian architecture. Over 200 craftsmen were involved in its construction, and many of the materials were imported from around the world, including marble from Italy and slate from Wales.
The castle's history is steeped in both triumph and tragedy, with the Larnach family facing financial hardships and personal losses. After Larnach's death in 1898, the castle changed hands numerous times, falling into disrepair. However, in 1967, the Barker family bought the castle and painstakingly restored it to its former glory, transforming it into a popular tourist destination.
Today, visitors can explore the beautifully restored interiors, including the ballroom and the tower, which offers stunning views of the Otago Peninsula. The lush surrounding gardens, awarded "Garden of International Significance," are perfect for leisurely strolls. Larnach Castle also hosts various events, including high tea and garden tours, providing a unique insight into New Zealand’s colonial past.
