Serial Griller-Oakura
The Serial Griller Train in Oakura is run by Dave and Keren Kurth, who turned their passion for burgers into a thriving business. After experiencing disappointment with various burgers while dining out—often encountering too much bread, dried-out patties, or flavors reminiscent of meatloaf—they decided to take matters into their own hands.
They began experimenting with recipes at home, conducting research, and soon developed an amazing burger that they were eager to share. After receiving rave reviews from friends and family, they realized they had something special and started dreaming of turning their culinary creations into a livelihood.
In 2015, they launched a food truck that primarily serviced Cooks Beach in the Coromandel, bringing along their three young boys. They later transitioned to a shipping container at Hahei Campground, where they continued to serve their delicious burgers for a few years.
Seeking a change of scenery, the Kurths moved to Taranaki after the first COVID lockdown, drawn by the area's family-friendly atmosphere. After months of searching for the ideal location, a friend's mother suggested the empty carriage in Oakura. The quirky charm of the carriage was irresistible to them, and they felt it was the perfect fit for their venture.
Located just a 14-minute drive from New Plymouth's CBD, the Serial Griller Train offers an ideal spot for weekend lunches and dinners, allowing locals and visitors alike to indulge in their classic American-style cheeseburgers.
