Matakana Island Surfing

Matakana Island Surfing

Matakana Island is located in the western Bay of Plenty in New Zealand's North Island. A long, flat barrier island, it is 20 km  in length but rarely more than 3 km wide. The island has been continuously populated for centuries by Māori tribes that are mostly associated with Ngāi Te Rangi.

Matakana Island is a beach break on a sandy beach, located along the coast of Matakana Island. You will need a boat or take the ferry, you can take your car across on the ferry. note you are not allowed to paddle the channel between Matakana Island and Mount Maunganui. There are several peaks along the beach to choose from with both right and left handers. The wave is punchy and fun. Good for Intermediate to expert surfers.

If you are after lessons, then there are plenty of instructors on hand at Mt Maunganui.

Also a great selection of Surf Shops for both purchasing and hire of Boards and Wetsuits.
