Pukaha National Wildlife Centre

Pukaha National Wildlife Centre

Situated on Mt Bruce about 20 minutes drive north of Masterton, this  wildlife centre is the home to some of New Zealand’s most endangered wildlife including tuatara, eels, kaka, kōkako and kākāriki.

There is a free flight aviary to visit and some great easy trail walks to do in the native forest.

Unfortunately it is only open Monday to Saturday.

On site there is a carving workshop or Whare Whakairo in Maori. and see carvers in action which is very interesting.

For those that like a range of guided tours are available where you can hear the stories of the past and learn more about the environment and genealogy of the region.

There are also educational talk by rangers each day

  • 11am Reptiles and Fauna
  • 12pm Kiwi
  • 1.30pm Long Fin Eel
  • 3pm Kaka

It's well worth a visit.
