Taitua Arboretum

Nestled in Hamilton, Taitua Arboretum spans 22 hectares and boasts an impressive collection of mature trees, making it a picturesque spot often chosen for wedding photos.

The arboretum's story began in 1973 when John and Bunny Mortimer started planting trees and shrubs to provide shelter and shade for local wildlife. Their lifelong passion for growing both native and exotic flora laid the foundation for what would become a cherished community asset.

By the time it was gifted to Hamilton in 1997, Taitua Arboretum was officially recognized and opened to the public. Today, it features tranquil lakes, diverse woodland gardens, and abundant birdlife, all connected by a network of walking tracks.

Whether you're looking for a peaceful weekend stroll, a family picnic, or a more vigorous hike, the arboretum is an ideal destination. For a longer adventure, start at Till’s Lookout on Melva Street, which offers stunning views of Hamilton. From there, follow the path for a 30-minute walk to the arboretum.

Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead at all times.
