TranzAlpine Train

TranzAlpine Train

The TranzAlpine Train journey from Christchurch to Greymouth is considered to not only be the best rail journey in New Zealand, but one of the best in the world.

It takes you 223km  in around 5 hours. I wouldn't recommend returning the same day because Greymouth and surrounds have a lot to offer. Stay over night and enjoy, maybe even rent a car and travel the cost for a few days. See some of my other blogs for idea's.

Anyway, back to the train.

The journey takes you from Christchurch through to Springfield, Arthurs Pass, Lake Brunner and on to Greymouth.

I am not going to explain the scenery because I simply could not do it justice…..I won't tell you about the tunnels, the viaducts, rocky banks, deep rivers and snowy peaks.

The train has a brilliant restaurant with hot and cold meals and beverages.

There is also an open viewing car, so you can experience the wind and alpine air.

WARNING

If you wish to take this train ride, do your homework and book ahead because it's extremely difficult to just turn up and expect a seat. It is always in such high demand.
