New Zealand Maritime Museum

New Zealand Maritime Museum

The New Zealand Maritime Museum Hui Te Ananui A Tangaroa, located on Hobson Wharf beside Auckland's Viaduct Harbour, is a treasure trove of maritime history. This museum celebrates New Zealand's rich maritime heritage, from the first Polynesian navigators to modern triumphs like the America's Cup. Its Māori name, "Te Huiteanaui-A-Tangaroa," translates to "Holder of the Treasures of Tangaroa" (the Sea God), reflecting its deep connection to the sea.

As one of the most maritime nations in the world, New Zealand's history is profoundly shaped by the sea, influencing immigration, trade, design, innovation, and leisure. The museum serves as a vibrant hub for exploring these maritime stories right in the heart of Auckland.

The museum boasts a diverse collection of over 130 watercraft, ranging from simple surfboards to the 18-metre ketch-rigged scow, TED ASHBY. Its exhibits cover a broad spectrum of maritime history, including artifacts from early Pacific voyaging, European exploration, and contemporary sea-faring achievements. Highlights include traditional canoes, yachts, waka, vessel parts, and steam engines, offering a comprehensive look at New Zealand’s oceanic legacy.
