The Kauaeranga Kauri Trail (Pinnacles Walk)
The Kauaeranga Kauri Trail (Pinnacles Walk) is a must-do hike on the Coromandel Peninsula, combining stunning natural beauty with fascinating historical insights. The 8-hour return trek follows the paths once used by kauri loggers in the early 20th century, providing a glimpse into the region’s logging heritage. Along the way, you’ll cross swing bridges over scenic streams, traverse rugged ridges, and climb steep staircases cut into the rock.
The trail passes through beautiful native forests, featuring kauri, rimu, and totara trees, and leads to the Pinnacles Hut, where many hikers choose to stay overnight. The hut accommodates up to 80 people and offers basic facilities, making it a popular stop before the final ascent to the summit. The last section of the hike includes rock scrambling, but the 360-degree panoramic views from the Pinnacles summit make the effort worthwhile. You’ll see the Coromandel coastline, the Firth of Thames, and the Hauraki Gulf, along with the rugged valleys of the Kauaeranga Valley.
The trailhead starts at the Kauaeranga Valley Visitor Centre, which provides information on the trail, weather conditions, and the area’s history. From there, a short drive takes you to the Kauaeranga Road End car park, where the hike officially begins. For a more immersive experience, consider an overnight stay at the Pinnacles Hut to catch a breathtaking sunrise from the summit. It’s an ideal hike for nature lovers, history buffs, and anyone seeking an unforgettable adventure.
