Eastwoodhill National Arboretum

Eastwoodhill National Arboretum

One man’s vision becomes a national asset.

In 1910 Douglas Cook took up 250 hectares of hillside, 35km from Gisborne up the Ngatapa Valley in what is now known as Eastwoodhill National Arboretum.

It has New Zealand’s greatest collection of trees and plants from around the world. All growing outside in the ground. No glass houses here.

  • 15000+ Specimens
  • 2300+ Species
  • 530 Genera
  • 150 Families
  • 81 Countries represented
  • 6 Continents

The Arboretum operates with a 100-year masterplan and is an arboreal ark, a haven for threatened and endangered species with conservation and research central to operations.

Eastwoodhill is a feast for the eyes, a magnificent array of beautifully manicured gardens and colourful forest walks. Did I mention the magnificent waterfall, and the Coffee is great too.

Tracks are all weather and they do have Jeep Tours for those that wish and Golf Carts for hire too. Make it a fun day for the whole family.
